Spicebird on the web!

David Ascher recently mentioned Spicebird in his blog and suddenly we started finding articles and discussions about it at various places on the web. Feels good, but I thought its time we speak about it and set the expectations right.

What is Spicebird?

Spicebird is an open-source platform for collaboration. To start with, we integrated e-mail, calendar and instant messaging into one suite. The features available on the website are for Version 1.0, but we do have plans to release intermediate versions (one of which will be available really soon. Our roadmap and anonymous access to SVN will accompany the release)

Spicebird is based on the Mozilla Platform and shares code with Thunderbird and Sunbird. In the process we do contribute to the Thunderbird and Sunbird. We are not competing with Thunderbird or any other open source product. Using Spicebird does imply using the same code base! The number of email users is huge and they have varying needs. We are here to provide more choice to the users of email and collaboration suites.

What Spicebird is not

Spicebird is not a finished product yet. It is still in its alpha, preview, proof of concept or what ever you like to call it. We will give a 0.4 version out soon (really! very soon). We have been using it for more than a month and and it is fairly stable - atleast does not lose your mails ;)

It does not yet have the Content Management System, Wiki or a Blog integration, but we expect to have them by the time 0.7 is out. The 0.4 has a new, probably easy-to-use and simple user interface. It has email, news groups, RSS feeds, calendar, tasks and instant messaging.

Thanks for all the web links and please leave your comments here.

When Spicebird will be

When Spicebird will be something like Outlook/Lotus Notes for enterprise users what Thunderbird is for private users, than Spicebird will be a huge step forward for the FOSS world and users who like open products that respect standards - and people who like *good* products. :)

Hope for a preview version soon and that Gecko, Thunderbird and Sunbird can profit from your work too! Good luck!

Looks promising

Hello,
the Spicebird looks very promising, I will await your first version, and hope to enjoy it because I'm looking for something such.
Is there any possibility to test beta versions?
Greeting and all the best in 2008.

Servers and server protocols?

Hello! This looks interesting -- it's a nice rollup of some of the more useful client-side technologies with some nice integration features put together.

I am interested in this as a potential client suite to use with the Citadel groupware server and therefore would like to know what protocols and services you are planning to support? Obviously SMTP/IMAP for the email. How about calendars and address books? Will you be supporting GroupDAV, or better yet, iCalendar and vCard data over IMAP transport?

Feature wish

Hi, I am looking for something exactly what Spicebird promises. I have people working all over the world and I need something that fosters team collaboration, and is compatible and can be integrated with other software as a service applications e.g. SugarCRM. Few feature wishes came to mind right away, first and foremost security, security and security, followed by tight integration with Yahoo mail, calendar, tasks and contacts, and of course OpenOffice suite. Gimme all that, and I guarantee you, wrap it up I'll take it.

No download this time for me since I need production level to start with, but looking good so far so keep up the good work and you have a winner.

Cheers!

Option to store data on server please!

One feature I'd love to see you add to Spicebird is the ability to store data on a server. Thunderbird is brilliant, but this is really something they have gotten badly wrong. Many of us travel and need to use both a laptop and a desktop at different times, or dual-boot a single machine between Windows and Linux, or use Macs and occasionally need to use Windows.

For that kind of application, it is critical to be able to store the contacts, tasks, etc. on an IMAP (or other) server, instead of on the client system. And, of course, one needs to be able to work offline.

Good luck with Spicebird! Looks great!

planet mozilla

Wow, Spicebird looks awesome. Are you going to get this blog added to Planet Mozilla?

Internet crowd is fickle don't lose your chance

i was pretty excited to see the demo, but no download yet. Seriously guys
do you think people who come now will come back again to download. In this
instant gratification world you got a great chance to show off now. Don't
wait too long and lose your chance to get new users.

Keep up the good work

thank you

Release notices?

I think it would be fantastic if you were able to let people know when this product is ready for release...in the meantime, what must I do to become a beta tester?

Have to agree

I think this would be great for an individual or super-small (like 1 person) business - if I understand correctly, it should be possible to share files automatically(?) between 2 or 3 different machines - PC, laptop, PDA, etc. That would mean that I don't have to take my Outlook laptop to the shop to link with my T'bird PC. I can pass files from one to another without a server? If "yes", I need to test ASAP!!

really interesting

i'm not a tech blogger with a huge amout of readers but would love to try out spicebird - it sounds amazing where can i sign up?
